Reclined Twist

Supta Matsyendrasana (soup-tah mot-see-en-DRAHS-anna)

Gently twists and mobilizes the spine. Stretches chest, shoulders, and hips. Calming and releasing.

Reclined Twist

You Should Feel

Gentle twist through your spine. Stretch across your chest and outer hip. Release.

How to Get Into the Pose

  • 1Lie on your back, draw one knee into your chest
  • 2Guide your knee across your body toward the ground
  • 3Opposite arm reaches out to the side
  • 4Gaze can follow your outstretched hand or stay neutral
  • 5Both shoulders stay grounded (top shoulder may lift—that's fine)

Modifications

  • If knee doesn't reach the ground: Place a block or blanket under your knee for support
  • If neck is sensitive: Keep your gaze neutral instead of turning your head
  • To deepen: Extend the leg that's crossing over your body
