Salamba Bhujangasana (sah-LOM-bah boo-jang-GAHS-anna)
Gently opens chest and strengthens spine. More accessible backbend than cobra. Prepares body for deeper backbends.

You Should Feel
Gentle opening across your chest. Work in your back muscles. Length through the front of your body.
How to Get Into the Pose
- 1Lie on your belly, forearms on the ground, elbows under shoulders
- 2Press forearms into the ground and lift your chest
- 3Legs active, tops of feet pressing down
- 4Press into elbows and lift head
- 5Gaze forward or slightly up
Modifications
- •If low back is sensitive: Lower down slightly, don't lift as high
- •If shoulders are tight: Walk your elbows slightly forward
- •To deepen: Lift higher onto your hands (moving toward cobra)
