Tree Pose

Vrksasana (vrik-SHAHS-anna)

Builds balance, focus, and stability. Strengthens standing leg and core. Opens hips.

Tree Pose

You Should Feel

Work in your standing leg—foot grounding, leg strong. Opening in your lifted hip. Steady focus.

How to Get Into the Pose

  • 1Standing leg strong, foot grounded through all four corners
  • 2Lifted foot presses into standing leg (avoid placing foot on knee—above or below only)
  • 3Hips level, not one hip higher than the other
  • 4Hands at heart center, overhead, or on hips
  • 5Gaze steady on one point (drishti)

Modifications

  • If balance is challenging: Keep toes of lifted foot on the ground, heel resting on ankle
  • If hips are tight: Keep foot lower on shin instead of thigh
  • To deepen: Close your eyes
