Upward Salute

You Should Feel

Length through your entire spine and side bodies. Opening across your chest. Engagement through your legs and core.

How to Get Into the Pose

  • 1Stand in mountain pose
  • 2Reach arms overhead, palms facing each other or touching
  • 3Shoulders stay down, away from ears
  • 4Slight backbend available—lift chest, gaze up
  • 5Legs stay active, core engaged
  • 6Ribs don't thrust forward

Modifications

  • If shoulders are tight: Keep arms shoulder-width apart or wider
  • If low back is sensitive: Keep less or no backbend, gaze forward
  • If balance is challenging: Widen your stance
  • To deepen: Increase backbend, draw thumbs back behind you, lift gaze higher
